Week 7, Post #1

In the first solution it states that passive mindless activities such as watching a movie may not do much to relieve the stress of a busy work/school schedule. It’s recommended that you do something active, which I can relate to. By going to the gym when I have free time it actually energizes me to get through my week. With the second solution to life’s challenges it is recommended to find joy in what we do. This can dramatically effect how you feel about work and school considering that’s what the majority of your time is spend doing. I try to view school as an investment in my future and see it as only a temporary bump in the road. By getting a good education it opens up many doors to do what truly makes you happy. In the third solution it’s said that joy and pain are found in the same place, which I can relate to in both my work and school life. Nothing gives me more satisfaction/annoyance than work and school. As long as I manage the stressors both can successfully co-exist.

  1. Many people I work with go religiously to the gym either before work, during lunch or after work. Since I work in a group of 60+ people, I am sure glad they do – I can’t imagine the stress level around here if they didn’t use this first solution to create “joyful living!”

It sounds as if you’re the type of person who can focus on the future and doesn’t need immediate gratification. For those who want things now or yesterday, they probably need to find something else to be joyful about than whatever the advantage they will have in the distant future because they go to school and work hard now.

I do agree with you about how much satisfaction yet annoyance we can get from work and school. It is incredible how much we don’t know and how much there is to learn through a college education and experience. However, the learning part can be very hard and frustrating!

  2. The gym is one of the best ways to relieve stress, and keep your energy up during the semester. This is what I do as well!! I go to a crossfit fitness gym two days a week, and then hit the gym on the weekend mornings. However, I must kindly disagree regarding the mindless activity like movies not being relaxing. This is really one of my only outlets when doing homework all weekend long (even a short-lived 15 minute session). I cannot wait to graduate in the spring of 2013, and be able to go to school for things I want to learn, rather than need to learn. I wish to be fluent in Spanish, and not pay for the State College tuition to accomplish that. This will give me peace, and make me happy. Great posting this week Mark!!

  3. Oh man, there is no way I could sit down and try to watch a movie to de-stress from a horrible day at work, or from an overwhelming schedule. When I feel very overwhelmed with every I start to stress out big time and I become a little mean. So, when I start to feel that I just get my dog ready and we go for a run or walk. I feel like going out and doing something helps me calm down and regain myself. I like how you explain school as an investment in your future. I should start doing that because I feel like I have to be in school. Nice post!
